Kelsey

Kelsey went to a few more death scenes during the week and Zara texted her whenever something amusing or interesting happened on patrol. It made the nights not quite so long and lonely – it could be hard to keep one’s eyes open when it was three a.m., the office was empty and the phones weren’t ringing.

But Kelsey found Zara infinitely interesting and she definitely kept her entertained.

On Wednesday morning, just as Kelsey was coming off her last shift before twenty-four beautiful hours of freedom – and her dinner date with Zara – she met Dylan and Elise at the time clock.

“Good morning,” Elise said, all smiles.

Dylan rolled her eyes. “This one’s indecently chipper in the mornings.”

“It’s going to be a good day,” Kelsey said, feeding into Elise’s enthusiasm. Her eyelids were heavy and she was looking forward to a nice, long nap before her date, but she was feeling good. It wasn’t just about Zara, either – things in general were going well. “What’s on the agenda for today, ladies?”

“Maya investigated a pretty gruesome multiple homicide on Monday,” Dylan said. “The killer used some sort of poison to take down his victims, so I’ve got my hands full.”

“Sounds interesting,” Kelsey said. “What about the Messner case, are you still working on that?”

“Messner... no, I gave Dr. Trace my report on Monday,” she said. “I ran a standard tox screen and found nothing of interest.”

“And I finished the histology testing last week,” Elise added. “The tissue samples from the autopsy were healthy.”

Kelsey frowned. “I guess Dr. Trace will be making her ruling soon, then.”

“Yeah, I think she was planning to do it by the end of the week,” Dylan said. Kelsey clocked out, distracted by thoughts of the case as Dylan called after her, “Enjoy your day off!”

What Kelsey actually ended up doing on her day off was tossing and turning for a couple of hours before she finally gave up on sleep. Tori and Danica were usually good about keeping the volume of their classical music and binaural beats low while Kelsey was asleep, but today her mind didn’t want to shut off.

She could hear every note of the 1812 Overture floating down the hall. She heard the ducks quacking outside her window. And as the Overture took a dark turn, her mind went back to the Messner death scene.

It was obvious from the moment Kelsey saw Sean Messner’s shirt that there was more to the case than just a woman who’d reached her limit, but it turned out that the forensic evidence wasn’t enough to prove that. Kelsey had done everything right at the scene, or she thought she had, and her investigation had come up short. And that really bugged her.

Detective Logan and Zara were going to have to find out what really happened that night. On one hand, Kelsey was confident they’d get to the bottom of it, but on the other hand… it really bugged her.

That was her first case and even though she’d checked and double-checked her work, it hadn’t been enough.
